Interview with Dot D., author of Changes, Nick Of Time, Stolen Moments,
and Winner Take All.
How long have you been writing your story, Changes?
Wow. It’s been a long time. I think
about 2001 sometime. It started when my mother died. She had always told me I could do it, so I decided to try. Also
I really hated the story that was playing on the screen and this was my way to give Brooke what I wanted her to have.
How do you write?
Do you use an outline or do the characters dictate where the storyline is going?
Sometimes
I do a rough outline. But usually my characters take over. I remember when I
first started writing about Michael. He was to be a one night stand. Brooke was with Connor and eventually was going to end up with Ridge but Michael just took over. He demanded that I write about him. And before I knew it,
I realized that he was to be the true love of Brooke’s life. After that
I started to bring his family and his life into the story and now I think Changes is just as much about him as it is about
Brooke.
Do you ever intend to finish the story of Brooke and
Michael Copeland or will their love story continue for as long as there is a story to tell?
I
don’t have an ending in mind. I think its fun to write it like a soap opera,
unending and always changing.
We all know that B&B is horrible these days. How does this affect your writing?
It
really does affect me. I hate the show, I hate every single pairing. I have even found myself cringing at Brooke. I watch it on
and off, I can’t seem to totally cut the cord. But to answer the question,
I am far less inspired to write when I totally hate the show.
When
I started Changes I still loved Brooke and loved the show, I just hated Throoke and this was my way to distance Brooke from
Thorne. It’s different now and I am just not liking anything.
Do you think you’ll ever go back to Winner Take
All, one of my favorite Bridge stories by the way?
I
would like to finish it, give it an ending, but it is extremely difficult because I just can’t imagine myself writing
Ridge as any kind of prize or hero anymore.
What about Nick Of Time? Any plans to continue this story?
This
one is truly on hold. I just don’t see a way to write a Bricky story when
the on screen Nick can’t seem to stop sexing up everyone I hate. I don’t
know if I will ever go back to it.
As you know, recently I started a new archive for the
B&B Fan Fiction board, so I took the opportunity to reread the earlier chapters of Changes. I noticed that your writing had evolved. You have always been
a good writer, but I was surprised to see that your writing is far superior now, more refined.
Have you noticed the change in your writing?
I
think I got better as I wrote more, but right now it’s been a while since I wrote anything and to say I am rusty is
a huge understatement. I’ve been going back and rereading things so I remember
who knows what and what has happened. It’s hard to get back into it and
I know if I make a mistake or two the readers will let me know.
The Bold and the Beautiful has never been as bad as it
is now. What are three quick ways that you would change the show as it is today?
Okay,
one, I would stop centering it on the Forresters. They may have been the premier
family but they are tired and played out. I’d much rather have Brooke out
of their orbit and maybe competing with them. I would end the Bridge merry go
round forever. I could see them being good friends and co parents to RJ in time. I’d bring in new and exciting men and give one to Brooke.
Two,
I’d do a LOT of recasting. AJ and KL (Ashley Jones and Kyle Lowder) don’t work for me as Brooke’s children and I really
don’t care for JG and HT (Jennifer Gareis and Heather Tom) as Brooke’s sisters.
And
three, I’d get back to more romance; mostly for Brooke, but for the others as well.
Bridget would get an age appropriate man and Rick an age appropriate woman. And I’d really like Brooke to have
a friend.
Can you see yourself writing something other than fan
fiction?
I
would like to do a story, perhaps based around the Copelands. I love that family
and I could see their life taking paths other than around the Bold cast.
Lastly, can you share any spoilers of upcoming chapters?
At
this point I am struggling to get back on track with the story. But I would love
it if people would post questions to me and maybe I could answer them.
Thank
you for the interview, Dot.
