Excerpt from What About Now by Jillcat
Time:
Thursday evening (Right About Now)
“I wonder who that can be?” Brooke muttered to herself as she obeyed
the summons of the doorbell. The children were in bed, Catherine had left for the evening and she was alone with her thoughts
yet again.
Opening her front door, she was stunned to see who was standing there.
“Deacon? What on earth
are you doing here?” she gasped as she absorbed the sight of the man she had not seen in four years. He was dressed
all in black, as usual, and she couldn’t help but note that he was as handsome as ever.
“Hey, Brooke. It’s
fantastic to see you again after all this time. I swear, you haven’t aged a day!” Despite the bravado of his words,
his nervousness was all too apparent.
She said nothing, feeling slightly dazed.
“Can I come in?”
Deacon asked.
“Um, yes, come on in. But you’re definitely the last person I was expecting to see!”
she led him through to the living area. Motioning him to take a seat, she sat on the sofa opposite, a look of confusion on
her face.
“I know this must be a real surprise for you. Sorry to spring it on you like this. I wanted to let
you know that I’m back in LA and was hoping we could work something out so I could be a part of Hope’s life again?
I’m sorry I stayed away so long, but until now things have kept me in San Francisco. To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure if coming back was the
right thing to do, until now.”
“So what’s changed? Why now?” she queried, letting the subject
of Hope slide for now.
“Well, a little bird told me that now might be the perfect time for me to come back.”
“A
little bird?” she felt even more puzzled.
“Well, actually, a little Bridget told me…”
……
“But,
I don’t understand … why would she tell you to come back now?”
“She told me that Ridge had
left you for Taylor, again,” his emphasis very pointed. “Hell, I don’t
want to say I told you so, but…”
“You told me so… Okay, so you’re here to rub salt in
my wounds? This is your revenge?”
“Hell, no, Brooke, that’s the last thing on my mind! Bridget said
that if there was ever a time for me to come back, it was now. She knows how much I love you and Hope and how much I’ve
dreamed of being a part of both your lives again. I haven’t kept any secrets from her.”
“I …
I can’t take this in, it’s all too much...” she shook her head in disbelief. After all this time, he thought
he was still in love with her?
……
“I’m not going to pressure you. I don’t expect
an answer right this minute or even anytime soon!” he pleaded. He took a deep breath and continued, “I just want
you to keep an open mind, okay? Can’t we try to get to know each other again? Can’t we spend time together –
you, me, our daughter and our other kids - and see if we can’t connect again?”
He stood, moved across the
room and sat beside the again speechless Brooke, clasping her hands in his. “Please, don’t you remember what it
was like between us before everything went bad and we had to face reality? Bridget is not an issue anymore. Hell, she’s
the one who told me to come and see you!
“We could have it all, Brooke, all that we dreamed about if only things
were different. Well, right here, right now, things are different!”
She looked dazedly into his incredibly blue
eyes, hearing the sincerity in his voice, seeing it etched in every line of his impassioned face. “I don’t know
what to think, this is so overwhelming…” she whispered.
“I know. It’s a lot to think about,
but please at least tell me that you will think about it?” he begged.
“Yes, yes, I’ll think about
it, Deacon, I promise.”
“That’s all I ask for now.”
