Stolen Moments
Excerpt from Stolen Moments
The song ended but the dance didn’t. Brooke had no desire to leave his arms and Deacon
seemed as content as she to stay on the dance floor with her. But the next song was a faster one and it woke them from their
dream state. “Let’s sit.” Brooke said to him. Deacon took her hand and led her back to the table. “I
can’t believe you set this all up. I never would have thought you could be such a romantic.” She smiled at him.
“I
guess it takes the right woman to bring it out in me.” He took her hand to his lips and kissed it. “Brooke, tonight,
it’s more than just all this.” He said with a gesture encompassing the table, the dance floor and the DJ.
“You
can’t keep saying these things Deacon. We have no chance, we have no future. I’m Bridget’s mother. Certainly
you can’t expect me to carry on with her husband.”
“Her ex-husband. Brooke, I’m not married
to her anymore.”
“Do you really think that makes a difference to Bridget? She loves you. Deacon I never
should have started anything to begin with. I must have been insane. I must still be insane to even be with you now.”
She looked sadly into his eyes.
“Do you regret this?” He asked.
“Of course I do.” She
told him. A look of pain came over his face but he quickly turned away. When he looked back at her it was gone. Had she even
seen it at all? She wondered.
“Yeah, why would a woman like you want anything to do with old Deac huh? Just scratchin’
an itch right? A little hot Deacon sex and time to move onto someone respectful right Brooke?”
Brooke looked
at him and her eyes darkened in anger. Almost with a will of it’s own her hand came up and slapped him hard across the
face. She then looked at her own hand and tears filled her eyes. “I’m leaving.” She said as she stood.
“Whatever.”
He told her. His face was hard and angry and Brooke couldn’t believe that this was the same man that had prepared this
evening for her. She grabbed her purse and walked away as fast as she could.
“You’re an idiot Sharpe.”
Deacon told himself. “She’s a lady, not a whore like you’re used to. You want her, you need her, you have
to stop her.” He stood and watched her walk away. Somehow he couldn’t make his legs move to follow her. Maybe
it’s for the best. He told himself.
